Sustainable Seafood Award


In 2005, the Vancouver Aquarium working along with Chef Robert Clark of C Restaurant in Vancouver, created a new program called Ocean Wise – designed to work with chefs and help them make good sustainable seafood purchasing decisions. The goal was to have these options readily identifiable on menus to make it easier for consumers to make conscious decisions. What we didn’t realize is how passionate chefs and restaurateurs would be about getting involved with the program. Over the past 4 years, Ocean Wise has grown from a single founding restaurant to over 2,050 locations across Canada!

The reason the program has been so successful comes down to the chefs. Chefs are at the cutting edge of the culinary world and as such have the ability to change people’s traditional tastes by inviting them into a world of new flavours, textures and aromas.

In 2006, Where Magazine in collaboration with Ocean Wise and other local sustainable seafood experts created the Sustainable Seafood Award for Vancouver. The aim of the award was to recognize these amazingly passionate and creative chefs and restaurants that have made huge strides in providing their patrons not only with the freshest and highest quality, but also the most ocean-friendly, sustainably sourced seafood possible.

This year it is with great pleasure that we present the award to Executive Chef Hayato Okamitsu, Chef Colin Metcalfe and Chef Kyle Groves of CATCH RESTAURANT!
